FEAR ENVELOPED MY SENSES, nearly blinding me. At first, all I could see were black eyes, rows of vicious teeth covered in blood, and the snarling face of evil.

“Koralein! Koralein, it’s me.” He shook me.

I blinked, clearing the hallucination from my vision. Rex was standing before me with a troubled expression darkening his eyes. A shaky breath released from my lungs and some of the tension in my body lessened at his presence.

“You shouldn’t be in here.” His voice was gentle. “Why didn’t you listen to Mik?”

“Like I ever listen,” I remarked, trying to hide the trembling in my voice. It was useless. I swallowed hard, my skin damp beneath my clothes. “Why…?” My head began to turn toward the mutilated bodies, but Rex captured it between his huge hands.

“Don’t look again.” His brown, gold-flecked eyes surveyed me, seeing the turmoil churning inside. “Come on. Let’s go outside.” He didn’t wait for a response as his hand found the small of my back and steered me toward the door.

The fresh air was a relief after the stifling metallic and rotting scent of blood and death. I took several deep breaths, a cloud forming in front of me each time. The coldness seeped into me, freezing the sheen of sweat that had formed. I clenched my jaw to keep my teeth from chattering. I didn’t want Rex to know.

He spun around and examined me, his eyes lingering over my face that was probably pale from shock. He slipped out of his fleece jacket and handed it to me.

“I’m not cold.” My voice quivered.

He sighed and tossed it over my shoulders regardless.

The jacket captured his warmth and spicy scent. The moment it was around me it was impossible not to thread my arms through the sleeves and cozy up in it. Part of me secretly pretended it was Rex wrapped around me instead.

“Are you okay?”

“Fine,” I hissed, hating he knew how affected I was. Who wouldn’t be? Only a monster.

Rex’s hand reached for me, but he thought better and let it drop. “It’s okay to be scared.”

A sneer slipped into place. “I’m not scared.” What a damn lie. I was terrified and not just of the demon that did this. I was afraid this was my fault somehow, that I could have stopped it if I was trained.

Guilt knotted my chest, obstructing my airways until it was difficult to breathe. I knew demons killed. I just never saw their damage first hand.

A violent shiver racked my body. I wanted to lie and say I was feeling weird because of the drugs Nate fed me last night, but when I met Rex’s penetrating gaze, he already knew the truth. Sometimes it was like he could read my mind.

“Don’t do that,” he said gently. This time his hand didn’t fall away when he reached for me, squeezing my shoulder. “Don’t blame yourself. I learned a long time ago you can’t save everyone.”

But I could save some.

“I’ll do it.”

Rex’s hand tightened on my shoulder. “What?”

“I’ll train.
